Beyond the Ordinary: Searching for Distinctive Homes in Wisconsin
Written by Wena Roeloffze, REALTOR and Lifestyle Expert. Owner of Realty Club 74, brokered by Coldwell Banker Realty.
Searching for a unique property in Wisconsin can be an exciting adventure. Whether you’re looking for an unconventional home, a historic building, or a home with very specific amenities, here are some tips to help you find that one-of-a-kind property:
1. Research Local Legends and Stories:
- Wisconsin is home to some fascinating properties with intriguing histories. Look into local legends, haunted houses, or unique architectural gems. For example, the Witch’s House in Fox Point features creepy concrete sculptures in the yard, or how about the Jungle House in New Berlin, which features interior garden and pool or even the Boat House in Milwaukee, which is a very unusual land home.
- But there is no reason that unique would equal quirky. What if unique means having an indoor basketball court, indoor golf putting facility, a home theatre, or an indoor pool? Maybe your definition of unique is even less to do with the indoor amenities, but about an outdoor work studio, a hobby farm, enjoying your own walking trails or having your own private patio overlooking the city of Milwaukee and Lake Michigan?
- I would not define unique, but would love for you to tell me what YOUR unique property looks and feels like, how you envision living in it and what would bring you joy. As a Lifestyle Expert, I have all the resources to find you a property that defines your unique lifestyle.
2. Explore Architectural Styles:
- Wisconsin boasts diverse architectural styles, from Frank Lloyd Wright masterpieces to midcentury modern designs. Consider exploring neighborhoods known for their unique homes. For instance, the Sunflower House in Madison, designed by James Dresser, has a sci-fi look with its dome shape and recycled steel beams.
- Another fascinating architecture style is the Tudor. The MacLaren House in Milwaukee is an example of the use of materials and craftsmanship, nearly unequaled in Milwaukee.
- Condominiums in the city and the suburbs all have their own unique styles. In the city, the styles range from the Romanesque (The Blatz), Colonial Revival (The Cudahy) and the modern high-rise (The Moderne). In Whitefish Bay, there have been a new development, which features ultra-modern townhomes.
- As you can see, Milwaukee and the surrounding areas offer a vast array of architectural styles. And because there are such an affinity to preserve the styles, many architects love getting involved in projects to renew older buildings and make it more sustainable. We work with a variety of architects to suit your needs.

4. Search Online Platforms:
- While this is certainly not where you might find them, it is still very useful and a great starting point. There are plenty of real estate websites to search for properties, and growing rapidly. Filter your search by keywords like “unique,” “historic,” or “unconventional.” You might discover hidden gems that stand out from the typical listings.
5. Think Beyond Residential Properties:
- Unique properties aren’t limited to houses. Consider other options like converted barns, historic mills, or lighthouses. These unconventional spaces can offer a one-of-a-kind living experience. Also note that some unique properties are situated on a large portion of acreage, or can be part of a building, overlooking the lake and/or city with a small footprint. Some unique homes carry historical requirements and specified maintenance and/or reconstruction. Having an open mind and be open to suggestions may be useful in your search.
6. Network with Locals:
- Engage with the community. Attend neighborhood events, join social media groups, and talk to locals. They might share insider information about unique properties that aren’t widely advertised. Wisconsin is famed for their friendliness and most people are eager to share information.
- Attend social functions, read relevant magazines and start being a part of the community, if you are looking for something within a specified area. Immersing yourself into the area you would like to live, opens opportunities and unexpected finds. We will be happy to make to appropriate introductions into the circles you wish to move in.
7. Be Patient and Persistent:
- Finding a unique property takes time. Be patient and keep searching. Sometimes the most extraordinary homes are hidden treasures waiting to be discovered. Having the right expectation about the timing in which your perfect property will pop-up, is important to note from the start.
